Types of Child Care

The following are child care options available in British Columbia. For more information contact the Child Care Resource and Referral Program in your area.

  • License-Not-Required (LNR) Family Child Care (birth up to and including age 12)
    Maximum: 2 children or a sibling group, other than the care provider's own
     
  • Registered License-Not-Required Family Child Care (birth up to and including age 12)
    Maximum: 2 children or a sibling group, other than the care provider's own Registered with the Child Care Resource & Referral Program
     
  • Licensed Family Child Care (LFCC) (birth up to and including age 12)
    Maximum: 7 children including the care provider's own under the age of 12. No more than 5 children under the age of 5; 3 children under the age of 3, including 1 child the age of 1.
     
  • Group Child Care (under 3 years of age)
    Not more than 12 in a group
     
  • Group Child Care (over 3 years of age)
    Not more than 25 in a group
     
  • Preschool (30 months to Kindergarten)
    Not more than 20 in a group
     
  • School Age Child Care (kindergarten up to and including age 12)
    Not more than 20 to 25 children in a group
     
  • In Child's Own Home
    Children in the family

Family and Group child care are licensed through the Community Care Facilities Branch, Ministry of Health.
